L. Darryl Quarles, MD

Dr. Quarles is the Director of the Nephrology Division and Associate Dean for Research at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Previously, he was Director of the Kidney Institute and the Department of Internal Medicine’s Nephrology Division at the University of Kansas Medical Center. There, he also served as Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Quarles earned his medical degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham after graduating from Duke University. He completed a residency in Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and a fellowship in Nephrology at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Quarles was on the faculty at Duke University from 1986 to 2004, where he was Professor of Medicine, Director of the Center for Bone and Mineral Disorders and developed a strong NIH funded research program. His research group, including three Assistant Research Professors, and several senior technicians and postdoctoral fellows, recently relocated to the University of Kansas Medical Center. Dr. Quarles is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and in the subspecialty of Nephrology. He is a former deputy editor for the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, and is a member of the editorial board for Bone and Mineral Metabolism, and a member of the publications committee for the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Research and was recently inducted into the Association of American Physicians.
